Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. since 1921, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which estimated that nearly 1.24 million people – or about 3,400 each day – suffered a new or recurrent heart attack in 2010. So this February, in recognition of American Heart Month, Delta Dental of Ohio wants to emphasize the connection between oral health and heart health.

As parents fill those brown paper bags with their kids’ lunches each morning, Delta Dental is shining light on some commonly-perceived foods that may appear healthy and balanced, but can unfortunately promote cavities down the road. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the company is offering tips to parents on healthier and lower-sugar alternatives to include in their children’s lunches.

The Delta Dental Foundation announced the recipients of its sixth annual Community Mini-Grant Program designed to support activities that address the oral health needs of residents in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.

Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana recently donated 1,350 toothbrushes to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit seeking to put a smile on the faces of service members currently serving overseas. The toothbrushes will be included in care packages for U.S. troops still stationed in Afghanistan, the Middle East and in Africa.

The Delta Dental Foundation has renewed its commitment to The Ohio State University College of Dentistry with a new three-year grant totaling $450,000 that will help operate the university’s Health Outreach Mobile Experience (H.O.M.E.) Coach. The program brings essential dental care to Ohio children in key underserved areas.
